Central is a straight seventeen miles from our door, and the route could hardly be simpler: US-123 east through Liberty and you are here. About twenty-five minutes, no interstate, no Greenville traffic to sit in.
For a town of just over five thousand people, that matters more than it sounds. Central and Easley are both in Pickens County and both in the School District of Pickens County, so our calendars already match yours — the same breaks, the same game nights, the same weeks when nobody has a free evening. And unlike the drive into Greenville, this one gets easier at rush hour rather than worse.
A town built at the midpoint
Central got its name honestly. When the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line pushed track through Pickens County in 1873, the company put its repair shops here because the spot sits almost exactly halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte — roughly 133 miles either way. Central Station came with a turntable, a depot and housing for the crews, and the town was incorporated on 17 March 1875 with limits drawn half a mile in every direction from that depot.
The shops moved to Greenville before the century was out, but the town kept going. Southern Wesleyan University has been teaching here since the autumn of 1906, and a college of that size in a town of that size changes the rhythm of the place — semesters, move-in weekends, graduation. If you are a student, that is worth planning around: the weeks either side of finals and move-out are the ones where everybody in the Upstate books at once.
What the drive actually buys you
Central sits between us and Clemson, so you have a genuine choice, and we would rather be straight with you about it: if you are already going to Clemson for something else, book near campus. If you are not, we are eight minutes closer, we are one room rather than a counter with a queue, and you see the same specialist every time.
